Another New York Public Radio CEO Departs

Current President and CEO LaFontaine Oliver will move to a new role in the organization, which says it has reduced a budget gap after rounds of staff cuts.

Another leadership shakeup is coming for New York Public Radio, which has struggled in recent years with huge budget deficits and gone through wave after wave of staffing cuts. On Tuesday, President and CEO LaFontaine Oliver announced that he will be stepping down from his job in the coming weeks, and stepping into a heretofore nonexistent role of "executive chair" at the nonprofit public radio institution, which will focus, as he described it in a letter to staff, on "new ways of working, fundraising, and serving the public."

Oliver became the head of NYPR in January 2023, after a string of interim and permanent station leaders failed to bring stability to the station following the 2018 resignation of former chief Laura Walker, who had presided over the organization for 23 years.
