When the CITY published its account of how an embattled, close confidante of Mayor Eric Adams tried to give its tenacious City Hall reporter an envelope of cash nestled in a bag of potato chips, one thing was immediately clear: This is the frontrunner for funniest New York City story of the 21st Century. (And the competition is fierce!)
However, after reading the CITY's story about Winnie Greco's attempt to gift a greasy bag of cash to Katie Honan in Harlem on Wednesday, we still had several questions. Some are practical. Others are philosophical. We hope in the coming days and weeks that they will all be answered.
How much money was in the bag?
The CITY's story reveals that there was "at least one $100 bill and several $20 bills," in the red envelope in the bag of chips, but that guesstimate came from pure eyeballing.
"Anticipating possible law enforcement investigations, THE CITY did not open the envelope or count the money inside," the story reads.
On one hand, we respect how the CITY went above and beyond their duty to ensure that not one fingerprint was laid on these bills—it exhibits an admirable commitment to integrity above curiosity.
On the other hand: OH COME ON, HOW MUCH CASH ARE WE TALKING ABOUT HERE???!?!?!?
